Completing the Application Materials
Correctly and completely filling out the required application and supplemental questionnaire (if applicable) and returning them by the indicated closing date and time to the Personnel Department assures consideration of your application.
Applications that are returned by mail will be accepted if they bear a postmark of the closing date or before. Resumes are not accepted in place of a completed Deschutes County Application; however, resumes may be attached to the application packet.
Since each opening in Deschutes County is unique, a separate application form with any corresponding supplemental materials needs to be completed for each opening.
The data requested on the perforated Confidential Applicant Information section of our employment application is voluntary and will not be used for selection purposes. It requests data, which is required by federal equal employment opportunity laws for our records only.
Examinations
The type of examination given will vary with each position. The examination process may include one or more of the following types of tests:
- Supplemental Questionnaire
- Multiple Choice, True/False or Essay Examination
- Performance Test
- Physical Examination
- Panel Interview
- Assessment Center
- Typing/Skills Test
- Other Job Related Testing
Recruiting is a competitive process; therefore, it is important that all applications and supplemental materials are completed in detail.
A supplemental questionnaire is a series of questions designed to obtain detailed information regarding your qualifications for a particular job, to see if you have the ability to follow instructions, and sometimes to obtain a handwriting sample. Your responses to the supplemental questionnaire weigh very heavily in the final selection process by the hiring department. Please be as detailed and concise as possible in answering these questions.
Hiring Lists
A hiring list consists of those applicants who have received a passing score in the testing process. Applicants are placed on a hiring list for the specific position for which they are applying , for a period of six months. Generally, a hiring list would be used for positions that require extensive testing, such as, Deputy Sheriff, Correctional Officer, and Law Enforcement Technician.
Notification to Applicants
All applicants are notified one way or another. If you do not make it as a finalist to be interviewed, you will be notified by mail. Notification is usually mailed to you approximately three weeks after recruitment closes. If you are chosen as a finalist, you will be contacted by phone to schedule an interview.
