South County Regional Problem Solving
|
In the past two decades, Southern Deschutes County has experienced steady growth and development. The cumulative effect of that growth is now evident in problems ranging from water quality to substandard roads to wildland fire hazards. There are approximately 13,000 lots, excluding Sunriver, 6,135 are improved and 7,341 are vacant. Of these, at least 1,800 lots have water tables at two feet (2') or less. Most of these lots were created before Oregon land use laws came into existence. The population in the area is widely dispersed and there are few available services, such as water, sewer, and paved roads. Deschutes County is the only major governing body in the region. In 1995, Deschutes County recognized that the area needed assistance in solving its unique land use problems, and applied for and received funding from the State of Oregon to work on resolving them.
