What is acceptable and what is not Asbestos
For non-friable ACM, a Non-Friable Asbestos Disposal Application is required to be submitted and approved prior to scheduling delivery to Knott Landfill. Non-friable ACM is charged at the regular disposal rates but must be delivered separately from other waste and properly packaged.
For friable asbestos, a DEQ ASN-4 form and a Special Waste Application must be submitted and approved prior to scheduling delivery to Knott Landfill. The disposal rate for friable ACM is $0.05/pound with a minimum charge of $100.00.
Petroleum Contaminated Soil
Household Hazardous Waste Facility Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is accepted free of charge from residential users at the Knott Landfill Hazardous Waste Facility. The HHW facility is open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the the second (2nd) and fourth (4th) Friday and Saturday each month. See the Free Events page for exact dates. The HHW Facility accepts a wide variety of hazardous waste, including solvents, fuels, antifreeze, aerosols, cleaners, poisons, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, oil filters, rechargeable batteries, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, propane tanks, pool & spa chemicals, mercury thermostats & switches, thermometers, etc.
The HHW facility also accepts business-generated hazardous waste through a separate program. Businesses must pre-register and fill out the Hazardous Waste Business Form to participate. Fees are charged based on the type and amount of waste accepted.
E-Waste (Home and business electronic equipment) Televisions (tube, projection or flat screen), computers (including laptops) and monitors (tube and flat screen) are not accepted for disposal at Knott Landfill or the Negus Transfer Station, but can be recycled. See below for details.
Electronic equipment including televisions, computers, laptops, monitors, computer peripherals (keyboards, mice, disk drives, printers, scanners, etc.) computer cables and parts, test equipment, point of sale equipment, cellular phones, fax machines, telephones, telephone equipment, radios, DVD/VHS players, projectors, microwave ovens, copy machines, etc. can be recycled at the Knott Landfill Recycling Center (operated by Deschutes Recycling, LLC) and Negus Transfer Station (operated by Deschutes County Solid Waste Department).
Acceptance policies are summarized on the following chart:
*Small Businesses and Non-profit Groups (10 or fewer employees)
**Large Businesses and Non-profit Groups (More than 10 employees)
Fees for electronics recycling at the Knott Landfill Recycling Center are $5 for the first 20 pounds (minimum charge) and $0.25/lb for each additional pound above 20 pounds.

Effective January 1, 2010, televisions, computers, and monitors will no longer be accepted for disposal at any County landfill and transfer facilities.

Auto batteries are accepted free of charge at the Recycling Center at Knott Landfill or any Deschutes County Transfer Station.
Paint
The PaintSmart Program is available for household generators only. Contractors and businesses with leftover paint can use the County's Business Hazardous Waste Program.
Used Motor Oil
Medical Sharps Medical sharps such as lancettes and hypodermic needles from home self-medicating healthcare are accepted free of charge at the Knott Landfill scalehouse or any Deschutes county Transfer Station. The sharps must be in a sealed, leak proof, puncture proof container, preferable a manufactured sharps container available for purchase at most pharmacies and medical supply retailers. When delivering containers, please contact the site attendant for directions on where to place containers.
Household Pharmaceuticals & Medicines Household pharmaceuticals and medicine can de disposed of in the regular garbage. Do not dispose of down a drain or toilet.
