The mission of the Volunteer Program at Deschutes County Juvenile Community Justice is to enhance the quality and quantity of services available to youth needing therapeutic treatment, socialization, education, recreation, spirituality and vocational opportunities. We welcome and strongly encourage the involvement of volunteers and interns from our community.
Local citizen participation within Deschutes County facilities and its programs involves the acceptance of one basic concept—People Helping People.
Our youth benefit from a wide range of competency developing experiences, including positive relationship-building with others for healthy growth and development. It is the belief of Juvenile Community Justice that community residents have the ability to enhance the lives of these youth by increasing the quality and quantity of experiences available to them; to compliment, amplify, extend, and enhance the services provided by regular staff. Volunteers are not however, expected to take the place of paid staff.
Volunteers are recognized as a significant element in the total system of services offered to youth in Deschutes County. By offering time, talents, and expertise, volunteers can provide the personal relationships through which troubled youth can be helped to find their way as responsible, productive community members. Volunteers can also assist in providing goods and services that enhance those provided by the County.
The primary objective of the Juvenile Community Justice Volunteer Program is to involve local citizens in the lives of youth and families in our system to promote competency development and positive community values. Second, and equally as important, is to guide youth toward more acceptable behavior. Volunteers can assist in achieving these objectives through the following areas:·
- Providing a wide range of activities for youth that promote healthy growth and competency development.
- Assisting youth in establishing positive relationships with individuals in the community, which can result in their learning to function as responsible citizens.
- Promoting education and its importance in future endeavors by staying in school, graduating or receiving a GED, while the youth is in placement.
- Providing information about employment opportunities, vocational training, and counseling within our community.
