A local workshop: Living Well with Chronic Conditions

 

 

Are you or a loved one living with...

  • Arthritis?
  • Diabetes?
  • Asthma?
  • Heart Disease?
  • Cancer?
  • Or some other chronic health condition?

 

Learn what you can do to feel better and manage your condition more effectively! The Living Well with Chronic Conditions* class is a workshop given once a week over a six week period of time. Classes last two and a half hours each and take place in community settings such as senior centers, churches, libraries and hospitals.

 

Who Participates?

People with different chronic health problems attend together.   Workshops are facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom have a chronic condition themselves. Classes are fun and interactive and provide participants with an opportunity to share their successes and build a common source of support. Family members are also welcome to attend.

 

Topics covered:

 

1) Managing problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation

2) Safe, easy exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and  endurance

3) Appropriate use of medications

4) Improving communication with family, friends, and health professionals

5) Tips for eating well

6) Setting weekly goals

7) Effective problem solving

 

Each participant in the workshop receives a copy of the book, Living a Healthy Life With Chronic Conditions, 4th Edition .

Please note: The cost to participate varies depending on location. Contact the person listed for each workshop to determine how much they charge. Typical costs for the 6-week class run anywhere from $10-$40 total - only  $1.70 - $6.70 per class!

*Living Well with Chronic Conditions is the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program developed and tested by Stanford University. It is designed to complement and enhance medical treatment and disease management. Research has shown that participants are able to manage their symptoms better and communicate more easily with their doctors and loved ones. People who complete the program feel better, are less limited by their illness, and may spend less time at the doctor or in the hospital.
